Spring is a magical time of year here in the Ottawa area as our landscape begins to transform into the lush and green foliage, our birds also begin to return from their warm winter habitat.
One such species for which we always look forward to is the arrival of our ruby-throated hummingbirds. These late migrants slowly make their way back to our region, waiting for warmer weather as they continuously head north.
It’s no surprise that these birds take their time getting here, as given their small size, they would not be able to endure some of the early spring weather swings we often experience this time of year. Looking forward to green grasses and blooming flowers, there are a few things you can do around your yard to attract more hummingbirds this season, in addition to handing a nectar-filled feeder.
Native Plants
We have said it time and time again, it’s all about habitat! While artificially feeding our birds is a great way to supplement their diets (with the right seed of course), creating a natural habitat is far and away the best method to not only attracting more birds but allowing them to flourish for generations to come.
Hummingbirds are no different. While they will certainly visit your bright red feeders, brimming with our home-made mix of nectar, adding some natural plants that also provide food and shelter will aid in servicing more hummingbirds in your area. These birds can often become competitive for food sources, so by having a garden filled with petunias, for example, in addition to your nectar, the resources are not as limited.
In addition to the pollen and natural nectar extracted from native plants, these areas also attract the small insects these birds depend on for adequate protein intake.
Water
No, hummingbirds will not be able to perch alongside the robins in your full-size bird bath. They will, however, relish in the gentle mist from one of our misters that can easily be attached to any bird bath. With one of these hydrating pieces of equipment installed, you can continue to allow your larger songbirds the opportunity to bathe, as well as watch your hummingbirds fly through the cool mist during a hot summer day.
Swings
A hummingbird swing is a great addition to any backyard filled with hummingbirds.
As we said above, these birds can become competitive around food sources and these swings, when placed strategically, allow for hummers to perch with an adequate view around the feeder as they wait their turn or just monitor the level of activity.
