Without a terrible amount of snow on the ground and temperatures that are still quite bearable, now is a great time of year to get outdoors, fill those feeders or even hang a brand-new nesting box.

In addition to our chickadees, nuthatches and winter finches, owls are an absolute favourite of ours and many others. This is a great time of year to grab a friend or two, head out into the field and organize your own owl prowl and see what kind of species you can find here in the greater Ottawa area.

There are roughly 200 species of owls on our big, beautiful planet and we are fortunate that 16 of those species call Canada home. Given their elusive habits, spotting one can be a challenge, but one definitely worth pursuing. With that in mind, we have compiled a quick list of five interesting facts about these large raptors that you might not have known!
