The Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists (MVFN) club provides birders and nature lovers the opportunity to learn about nature around them as well as lending a hand to help conserve their environment. The MVFN club explores and studies in Mississippi Mills, Carleton Place, Perth, Lanark Highlands, Beckwith and surrounding areas of Lanark County in Ontario’s Mississippi River Valley.

The MVFNs website is loaded with content for the bird enthusiast, featuring a section dedicated to highlighting some of the best bird watching locations in and around Lanark County. According to their webpage, Lanark County is home to over 200 species of birds. If you are in the mood to see a certain bird the list of locations details how to get there as well as what types of birds you can hope to see. Have visions of spotting the majestic Bald Eagle? Visit the Appleton and Mississippi Mills location. Or take a nice ride to the Rideau Ferry Conservation Area and possibly view a lovely Swan gracing the water.

There is plenty to do for the Lanark County birder as well

There is something for everyone at the MVFN. Coming up this spring, the MVFN will be hosting a variety of bird walks. Some are for the early birders at 6 AM and others for the evening buff. These walks take place at variety of different locations which make the outings fun for everyone as there may be something new to see at each event. Furthermore, they often host educational talks and/or lectures.

Last month’s talk was titled: Environmental Threats to the Avian Species: A Springtime of Silence. MVFN was proud to announce that Michael Runtz from Carleton University was the guest speaker where he discussed at length, the current threats to our birds.

MVFN’s canoe/kayak programme also takes to the water again this spring, with June 14 scheduled as the date for their first paddle! Experience a wonderful day trip, paddling through some of the areas most diverse waters where participants can catch a glimpse of local birds, wildlife as well as observe the beautiful flora and fauna.

We encourage you to visit their website at http://mvfn.ca/  for more details on the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalist Club and everything they have going on when the snow melts this spring.
