Custom Nesting Box for Barred Owls
Provide a nesting box for local barred owls!
Barred Owl Nesting Box Installation Information:
- Attach the nesting box 15' to 30' feet above the ground in a live tree that is set back from the edge of a clearing, and where a clear flight path is available in front of the entry hole.
- Put as far away as possible from activity – out in the bush, not in back yard
- Put it near a swamp, marsh, or pond - where there is food for the owls (snakes, bugs, crawfish)
- Do not place it facing west. Avoid the west wind. They nest in late January into February – and there are nasty winds from the west that can drop the success rate.
- Facing east or southeast is best – it gets morning sun, but not hot southwestern sun.
- Shavings are an option to put in the base of the nesting box. Cedar shavings are not recommended as they can emit fumes.
