Sure, big-box retailers are great and enjoyed by many of us. With a wide range of products matched with competitive pricing, visiting one of these stores can be a no-brainer for many of us.
That being said, when it comes to environmental products or those products which we feed our pets, wildlife, flowers, gardens and birds, a little more thought ought to be put into the purchase.
After the release of the movie The Messenger (if you haven’t seen it already, do so ASAP), the eyes of many were opened to the unfortunate reality of the impact of our daily activities have on not only birds but plants and wildlife as well.
The implications are widespread and unfortunately, there is not always one culprit we need to eliminate. With that said, all is not lost, and with proper tweaking to our daily lives and routines, we can preserve our planet and protect our wildlife.
Pesticides
David Suzuki and the David Suzuki Foundation have been quite vocal in the fight against bee-killing pesticide use. His research and the research of many others have concluded that the use of neonicotinoid pesticides is calming significant harm to our environment, so much, that he and others are pushing for an all-out ban on the use of the pesticide here in Canada.
Canadian regulators have actually confirmed that neonics used on corn seed is a significant contributing factor to bee die-offs in both Ontario and Quebec.
When it comes to bird seed, we can’t honestly speak to what is inside other suppliers a bag of seed. We can, however guarantee that every single grain of seed that comes through our doors is free from the use of both herbicides and pesticides, uses no neonics in any processes, contains no filler, is 100% non-GMO and is a certified organic product packaged in a biodegradable bag.
It may not seem like much, but the next time you fill your bird feeders, you will be certain at least one by-product you purchase is not contributing to the decline of our natural habitat.
Products That Support Conservation
Once again, it’s not all about the birds. Almost. But not entirely.
In addition to our seed product, our commitment to conservation and the sale of products that have a minimal impact on our environment. Our Squirrel Buster product line that comes from a company right here in Canada is completely constructed of 100% recyclable materials and in building each feeder, Brome Bird Care solely uses materials that are tailored to the environment and are not easily damaged or worn out.
Our Aspects line of feeders, which are all manufactured here in North America, and place a heavy emphasis on buying local, supporting their dealers and the environment. In addition to supporting independent retailers such as Gilligallou by not selling their products to big box-type organizations, a portion of their proceeds is donated to various wildlife conservation programs on an annual basis.
All this to say, we live in an informed society and many of us are aware the challenges our environment is facing. It is indeed the small things that matter the most, the knowledge of where your products came from, how they were procured and how you intend to use them can make all the difference.
