With June upon us once again, it is officially Mississippi Mills Bike Month here in the Almonte area. As avid cyclists, this is a special time of year for us and one we use not only to get folks in the great outdoors but also to create awareness for the many wonderful cycling opportunities our area presents.
Organized by the Mississippi Mills Bicycle Movement, Bike Month takes place each and every June here in the Almonte area, celebrating cycling with a variety of events around Mississippi Mills.
In an effort to encourage safe cycling, the month is filled with events including guided rides, movies, parades, bike polo and professional races. Each and every year, as part of the event, we proudly organize our annual Birders on Bikes event to encourage both safe cycling and to promote the amazing birding opportunities the area provides as well.
During the 10-year history of Mississippi Mills Bike Month, we have been running Birders on Bikes tours since 2011 with amazing success. In addition to promoting safe cycling, it is a great opportunity for us to get out in the field with old and new friends and family.
How Birders on Bikes Works
If it’s your first time joining us, you are in for a treat. Typically, we have anywhere from 10-30 riders joining us on the tour. We meet in behind our Almonte Store (Heritage Court Mall) at 8:30 am for coffee and registration. Once everyone is ready to roll, we depart on the preplanned travel route and make many stops along the way.
Expect to identify upwards of 50 or more different bird species, snap some pictures and have some laughs along the way.
The ride takes place this Sunday, June 17th and the cost is $5/person with all of the proceeds going to Riding in Mississippi Mills (RIMM). Register with us today via email at gilligalloubird@gmail.com or stop in and see us in the store!
